Three datasets, one location record

Each location enriches the UN/LOCODE base record with data matched from independent sources. No source is authoritative alone — locodata resolves conflicts by priority and match confidence.

UNCTAD PLSCI Connectivity

The Port Liner Shipping Connectivity Index published quarterly by UNCTAD. Scores 1,167 ports on six components: ship calls, capacity (TEU), services, companies, vessel size, and destinations.

1,167 scored ports Quarterly Since 2006
AIS Voyage Data Vessel movements

Port-to-port voyage records derived from Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponder data. Vessel types resolved via ITU List V registry (233K vessels). Covers container, bulk, tanker, ro-ro, and general cargo movements.

Geographic coverage

Locations by continent

European coverage is intentionally dense — the EU maintains rigorous logistics infrastructure records including inland terminals, rail hubs, and border crossings. Asian coverage concentrates on port-heavy coastlines.

Location types

Function flags from UN/LOCODE

Each LOCODE carries up to eight function flags. A location may have multiple — Tokyo carries Port, Rail, Road, Airport, Postal, and ICD simultaneously.

Seaports
17,520locations
Function flag 1. Includes container terminals, bulk facilities, tanker berths, Ro-Ro ramps, and general cargo wharves.
Rail terminals
13,144locations
Function flag 2. Railway freight terminals, intermodal transfer points, and cargo handling stations.
Road terminals
68,440locations
Function flag 3. Road transport depots, truck freight terminals, and cross-docking facilities.
Airports
9,028locations
Function flag 4. Air cargo terminals and passenger airports with freight handling. Cross-referenced with 23,565 GeoNames airport records.
ICDs & Postal
6,100+locations
Function flags 5 (postal) and 6 (inland clearance depot). Dry ports and customs bonded warehouses away from the border.
Border crossings
4,200+locations
Function flag B. Land border crossings with customs facilities. Critical for Central Asia, EU–non-EU boundaries, and North American trade corridors.

AIS voyage data

Port-to-port shipping routes

Trade routes are derived from Global Fishing Watch AIS data. Only voyages by ITU-registered, non-fishing vessels are counted. Vessel type is resolved from the ITU List V registry (233K vessels).

Update schedule

How data stays current

Different sources update at different cadences. The API always reflects the most recently processed version of each dataset.

2× per year
UN/LOCODE registry
UNECE publishes new versions in January and July. New codes, name corrections, and subdivision changes are applied after each release.
Quarterly
PLSCI connectivity scores
UNCTAD publishes the Port Liner Shipping Connectivity Index each quarter. Port region assignments and scores are updated within days of release.
Monthly
AIS voyage data
New monthly voyage files are ingested as published. Trade routes and activity levels are recalculated after each new month is processed.
Daily
Coordinates
Place coordinate delta files (modifications and deletions) are applied daily. Coordinate corrections propagate automatically to affected locations.
Annual
Public holiday calendars
Holiday definitions are rebuilt each year from the latest library release, which tracks legislative changes across 249 countries.
